Course Description: Guided Studies
(0.5 credit per term-repeated with permission)
Prerequisite: Recommendation from the Principal or Guidance Counselor
Credit: Elective
Grading: Pass/Fail
This course is designed to support the intentional academic/personal development of students recommended by the principal or guidance counselor. This supported study period will include daily planning to recover and stay current with grade level academic progress. Tracking of student progress, homework completion requirements, tutoring/mentoring support, deficit skill support strategies, and reports to the student and team (including parents and guardians) will provide the foundation for this course. To motivate and provide structure to the class period, Daily Planning Sheets tied to daily points will be used to monitor student progress. A limited curriculum related to student needs which will include academic, career and personal/social topics will be delivered. A team approach focused on personal achievement and responsibility will guide the At-Risk program, of which the Guided Studies course is an integral part. (see the At-Risk Coordinator/Guidance Counselor for more information.)
Classroom Rules:
Social Skills:
The Sheldon Community School district has adopted the Boys Town Training principles. This includes social skills which will be taught and practiced. Once presented, students are expected to incorporate this skill into their personal "tool kit" for effective social interactions. Employers, schools and families appreciate individuals who can communicate clearly and conduct themselves respectfully.
Procedures:
Several procedures for classroom management, minimizing distractions while maximizing time on task, will be taught throughout the term. Students are expected to respectfully follow procedures for everyone's benefit.
Guiding Philosophy:
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing you have been doing and expecting a different result. What has been working for you? What has not?
The start of each academic term can be a "fresh start". The sum of your attitude, activities and interactions with others are the behaviors you choose. Your behaviors determine your reality, the good and the bad. In each moment you have the power to choose how you will react, what your behavior will be. Guided Studies will teach students skills to allow them to choose better behaviors and create a positive reality, even in the face of challenges.
Get ready; it is going to be a life changing ride! We're all in this together.
